I was approached to design a cover for Ursula Saunders book “How to Cope When Your Child Cannot” during the publisher pitching phase. After an initial brief I proposed the idea of a multilayered torn cover symbolising the complicated and sensitive nature of the issue itself and the stress it inherently puts on both parent and child. The decision to split the title horizontally and vertically was to illustrate the separation between how the child is feeling and what the parent must do.

I opted for bold but textured typography for the title and a more elegant display serif for the sub and author name to add a layer of optimism. The colour palette of black, white and pastel green helps to soften the message without impacting the seriousness of the subject. The cover helped to secure a publishing deal and only minor amends were made to the design by the publishers in-house team.
